In a significant step for the tech industry, major competitors OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft have joined forces as key players in the new Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). This foundation operates under the independent guidance of the Linux Foundation. The AAIF's mission is clear: to create open, interoperable standards for the next generation of AI systems, known as AI agents, which can make decisions and take actions on their own. 

This partnership shows a strong agreement that proved infrastructure is vital to speed up the safe and secure roll-out of agentic AI. 

Why the Agentic AI Foundation Matters

As AI agents evolve from simple chatbots to complex tools like coding assistants and workflow automation, there is a real risk of the ecosystem breaking into incompatible, proprietary silos. The AAIF offers a vendor-neutral platform to prevent this fragmentation. It ensures that AI agents remain safe, portable, and reliable across different platforms. Key Open Standards and Contributions

The foundation launched with contributions of widely adopted technologies that will serve as the initial open standards:

> Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP): This is the universal standard for connecting AI models to external tools, data, and applications. Its widespread adoption by platforms like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot makes it foundational for AI tool use.

> OpenAI's AGENTS.md: A simple, open format that gives AI coding agents project-specific instructions and context. This ensures predictable AI behavior across diverse code repositories, and is already used in over 60,000 open-source projects.

> Block's Goose Framework: Block (the fintech company) contributed its open-source agent framework, which provides the reliable, local-first infrastructure needed to build and execute agentic workflows that integrate with the MCP standard.

Google and Microsoft, alongside other Platinum members like AWS, Bloomberg, and Cloudflare, support the AAIF through funding and commitment to adopting the open standards.
